Hrant Dink, a Turkish journalist was brutally shot dead today in front of his newspaper office Agos in Istanbul. The gunmen seemed to be in his late teens. He was a Turkish national of Armenian descent, and many times convicted of 'insulting Turkishness'. He was an editor of a weekly Agos turkish – armenian magazine, and a prominent journalist.
He received numerous death threats and Turkish nationals saw him as a traitor because he was writing about Turkish genocide over the Armenian people that happened in the First World War. And because of his writings and comments on Armenian identity and the genocide, on October 7th 2005 he was given a six month prison sentence by the Sisli Court of First Instance No 2 in Istanbul for 'insulting Turkishness'. The sentence was suspended by the court because Hrant Dink had no previous convictions.
He was also being prosecuted under Article 301 for another offence. Article 301, on the denigration of Turkishness, the Republic, and the foundation and institutions of the State, was introduced with the legislative reforms of 1 June 2005 and replaced Article 159 of the old penal code. Amnesty International repeatedly opposed the use of Article 159 to prosecute non-violent critical opinion and called on the Turkish authorities to abolish the article. 1
A lot of people wanted him to stop writing about the genocide over Armenians, and today he was silenced by one of them. Turkish Authorities still don't know who the perpetrators are.
