Death of a PFLP founder

George Habash (August 2, 1926?– January 26, 2008) a founder of PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) died in Jordan on Saturday. Mahmoud Abbas, a president of Palestinian Authority declared three days of national mourning. He left a wife, and two daughters.

PFLP was founded in December 1967, six months after the Six Day War. PFLP had a goal of establishing a Palestinian state on the whole of the historical Palestine, and opposing any negotiations or recognition of Isreal. In the past it was known for hijacking airplanes and attacks aimed against Israel.

George Habash stopped his support for Yasser Arafat when he signed the Oslo Peace Accords in 1993 accusing him of of betraying the Palestinian cause.
Many Arabs and Palestinians saw him as a revolutionary, fighting for their cause.

George Habash resigned as a secretary general of the PFLP in 2000 and was replaced by Abu Ali Mustafa, who was killed in 2001 during the second Intifada (Palestinian uprising).
Abdel Raheem Mallouh is the current secretary general of the PFLP.
